Shakyamuni was originally a prince of Kapilavastu in ancient India. One day, whilst out touring his realm for the first time, he encountered spiritual practitioners and his subjects suffering from old age, sickness and death, all of whom were hidden from him. The experience from his trip has affected Shakyamuni deeply. He decided to renounce his regal title to walk the monastic path in search of liberation. He sought famous teachers and practiced asceticism for six years, enduring hunger, but liberation remained elusive. Once he fainted during an austere practice and a shepherdess chanced upon him and saved him with her offerings of goat milk. He realized that austerity alone cannot bring him liberation and his practice should turn to the middle way. He headed to Bodh Gaya instead and meditated under a Bodhi tree. He made a vow to never arise again should he fail to be liberated and attain enlightenment. On the seventh night, he witnessed his innate nature and attained supreme enlightenment.
What is the root and essence of Buddhism? All sentient beings have the wisdom and virtues of Tathagata, yet they are unable to attain enlightenment due to worldly delusions and attachments. All sentient beings to attain Buddhahood, and all sentient beings share the same nature as Buddhas. This is the foundation of Buddhism! Everyone can become a Buddha. This is the essence, the fundamental teaching! Everyone has a Buddha nature; this is the root. If you have Buddha nature, you have the seed of becoming a Buddha. You can blossom and bear fruit, grow your own flowers, and bear your own Buddha fruit. Buddhism is an education towards being a Buddha, and not a religion of worshipping the Buddha. In fact, it uses the wisdom of Prajna to break through frustrations of ignorance and achieve the Bodhi enlightenment.
2 things to be done on Vesak Puja:
1. To thank Shakyamuni Buddha for his arrival into the world and becoming a Buddha, enlightening the world of the fact of the universe and on life; allowing us to inherit such a precious spiritual heritage, thus, inspiring us to be firmly believe that attaining enlightenment in present life and ultimately setting ourselves free is possible.
2. To awaken our inner Bodhicitta nature, attaining the Full Moon Sphere, eliminating the karma and ignorance committed since infinite kalpas, reconcile and cultivate together with all karmic creditors, eliminating ignorance and delusions, enlightening oneself and others, bring benefit to sentient beings of the six realms; Performing vast liberation for all sentient beings with the holy saints of the Four Holy realms!
