中元地官 赦罪消业
道家有三官，天官、地官、水官。天官赐福，地官赦罪，水官解厄。传统节日的”三元节”分别是上元的元宵节， 七月十五的中元节，十月十五的下元节。在七月十五这一天，地官打开地狱之门，放出地府里的全部鬼魂，已故的祖先在这一天可以回家团圆。
同时七月也是部分农作物收获的季节，所以在七月十五当天，人们纷纷用秋收的农作物祭拜祖先，向祖先报告今年的收成，并请老祖宗们尝尝新，尽一份孝心。这期间也有很多无家可归的孤魂野鬼，所以在这一天还会供奉食物给这些孤魂野鬼，安抚他们对人间不生怨恨。
因为七月十五又是地官的生日，所以后人就在这一天感恩地官，并祭拜祖先。
盂兰盆会 广施盂兰
目犍连尊者母亲在世时造了杀生等不善之业，死后堕进饿鬼道。尊者施展天眼通见亡母在地狱变成饿鬼，喉咙细如苇管，肚子却大如水缸，皮骨相连，饱受折磨，日夜苦闷相续。为了拯救母亲脱离此苦，便向佛陀请示解救之法。
佛陀指示目犍连于农历七月十五日，以百味饮食供养三宝，能蒙无量功德，得救七世父母。目犍连遵照佛陀指示，于当日设斋供僧，其母终于得脱离饿鬼之苦，往生天界。因此有了盂兰盆法会，以报答父母祖先之恩德。
