Shakyamuni was a prince in ancient India. One day, whilst out touring his realm for the first time, he encountered spiritual practitioners and his subjects suffering from old age, sickness, and death, all of whom were hidden from him. The experience from his trip has affected Shakyamuni deeply. He decided to renounce his regal title to walk the monastic path in search of liberation. He sought famous teachers and practiced asceticism for six years, enduring hunger, but liberation remained elusive. Once he fainted during an austere practice and a shepherdess chanced upon him and saved him with her offerings of goat milk. He realized that austerity alone cannot bring him liberation and his practice should turn to the middle way. He headed to Bodh Gaya instead and meditated under a Bodhi tree. He vowed never to arise again should he fail to be liberated and attain enlightenment. He witnessed his innate nature on the seventh night and attained supreme enlightenment.

What is the root and essence of Buddhism?
Buddha Nature: All sentient beings possess the wisdom and virtues of Tathagata, but delusions hinder enlightenment.
Fundamental Teaching: Buddhism teaches that everyone can become a Buddha by nurturing their inner seed of awakening.

Two things to be done on Vesak Puja:

1. Gratitude and Inspiration: We thank Shakyamuni Buddha for his enlightenment, illuminating our path. His legacy inspires us to believe in present-life enlightenment and ultimate liberation.
2. Inner Awakening and Compassion: Our goal is to awaken our inner Bodhicitta nature. By reconciling with karmic creditors, eliminating ignorance, and enlightening ourselves and others, we strive to benefit all sentient beings across realms.

1.Incense, Light Offering & Buddha Bathing Ceremony

Date: May 22 (Wednesday), 12PM – 6PM

Location: Xuan Ling Buddhist Shrine Hall, Singapore and Malaysia

Participants are welcome to pay respects to Shakyamuni Buddha by lighting incense and candles and participating in the Buddha bathing ritual. It’s an opportunity to express reverence and gratitude towards the Buddha. May all rejoice in the merits!

2.Shakyamuni Buddha Yoga & Empowerment

Date: May 22 (Wednesday)

Opening Address: 1PM – 4PM

Empowerment (Initiation) Session: 4:30PM – 6PM

Seekers may contact centre managers for more information. New participants will make offerings to the guru and the centre. Those who have already received this empowerment are eligible for free participation.

Why bathe the Buddha? Although the Buddha is already pure and perfect, during the bathing ritual, we see ourselves as the Buddha in front of us and visualize water pouring over our heads to remove obstructions, dispel afflictions, purify our bodies and minds. 💧
