Why Perform Puja?
The human being is a complex three-part combination of body, mind and spirit. The spiritual component, also traditionally known as the soul system consists of three Hun and seven Po (three souls and seven spirits). Three Hun are:
Heavenly Soul– Tai Guang, the divine light that enters the womb. This is the Hun that rises to heaven when one passes on.
Earthly Soul – Also known as the Shuang ling. This portion of the Hun system is alright when inhabiting an earthly body. After the death of the earthly body, it is no longer so. The Shuang ling or the Earthly Hun will be sent to report to the underworld for judgement by Yama and witness their lifetimes of karmic cause and effect to determine the next reincarnation into the 6 different realms of- Heaven, Asura, Human, Animals, Hungry Ghosts, and Hell.
Human Soul – Also known as the You Jing, will be attached to the earthly bodies from which they sprang forth from for eternity, never to be reborn. They will require sustenance from their descendants through offerings of incense, joss paper so that they can exist comfortably in the spirit world.
Why do we need to set up a tablet?
The tablet is equivalent to an entrance pass to the Puja. As there are Dharma Protectors guarding every Puja, the Ancestors or Karmic Creditors without the tablets will not be allowed to enter and they will miss the opportunity of being alleviated from suffering or liberated during the Puja.
The Ancestors’ souls are only able to enter to the Puja site for cultivation and prayers if the tablets have been set up with their names. After they enjoy these offering, they will protect their descendants with great pleasure; the karmic creditors will be satisfied after being alleviated and will no longer entangle with us.
