During Zhong Yuan Festival,
the Earthly Official Absolves Sin & Resolves Karma.
In Taoism, there are the Three Divine Officials – Heaven Official, Earth Official and Water Official. The Heaven Official bestows blessings, the Earth Official absolves one from sins and the Water Official changes one’s fortune in the face of calamities. There are 3 festivals known as “Shang Yuan” which is lantern festival, “Zhong Yuan” is on 15th of 7th month and “Xia Yuan” is on the 15th of 10th month.
The Earth Official is the keeper of the Gates of Hell and opens it on the 15th day of the lunar 7th month each year to release all the souls in the underworld for them to reunite with their families. The 7th month is also where parts of the crops are harvested and offered to ancestor’s souls to inform them of news of a good harvest and to show filial piety. As there are several lost souls without a home to go to, people will also set up altars with food offerings for these lost souls to pacify their hatred towards humanity.
As this day is also the Earth’s Official birthday, people show their appreciation to the Earth Official on this day and pay homage to their ancestors.
During Ullambana Festival,

Maudgalyāyana’s mother had committed killings and numerous sins when she was alive, she then reincarnated to the ‘hungry ghost’ realm after her death. Through Maudgalyāyana’s clairvoyance, he found his mother with nothing to eat and drink in the ‘hungry ghost’ realm. This pained Maudgalyāyana deeply and sought the help of Gautama Buddha. Lord Buddha advised him to make Ullambana offerings of food to the virtuous assembly of the Sangha on the 15th day of the lunar 7th month and harness the collective energy of the Sangha to liberate parents of past seven lifetimes. He followed Lord Buddha’s advice and finally saved his mother. Hence, this resulted in Ullambana Festival for all to perform filial piety to their deceased parents and ancestors.
As of today, the death toll of the COVID-19 pandemic is more than 4.18 million, with close to 200 million people been infected globally. What can we do for the victims?
We shall conduct a global online spiritual liberation ceremony for all beings dwelling in the water, land and air.
We will be making light offerings for 9 consecutive days, dedicating 200 Amitabha Dharma Vessels, conducting fire puja offerings to the sentient beings of ten dharma realms, as well as conducting a Nine-Day Ancestral Prayer Ceremony.
